TNT’s new black uniforms turned out to be a lucky charm Saturday night as it snapped a two-game skid with a 92-79 win over Meralco in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center.

RR Pogoy bounced back from a shooting slump by producing 27 points, eight rebounds and three assists as the Tropang Giga returned to their winning form after frustrating defeats to the Magnolia Hotshots Pambansang Manok and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

Jayson Castro had 24 points while Ray Parks Jr. had 17 points and 11 rebounds to also help TNT improve to 7-3 and keep an inside track at the twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.

Coach Bong Ravena said TNT played a more relaxed game compared to its 85-79 loss to Ginebra where the team looked weary.

“It gave us relief to win this game,” said Ravena. “It’s really an important game coming off a back-to-back loss. It’s been hard — the last two losses — but good thing we survived.”

The Tropang Giga brought out the black jerseys inspired by the “Black Mamba” kits of the Los Angeles Lakers and were able to perform like a team that started the bubble with five straight wins.

Pogoy was among the big reasons for TNT’s win, making 12-of-24 shots after combining for 7-of-31 during the losses to Magnolia and Ginebra.

Parks, who recently denied making some comments claimed by Phoenix Super LPG star Calvin Abueva when the latter personally apologized, shot 3-of-14 from the field but was able to draw some fouls, making all 10 attempts from the charity stripe.

Castro, on the other hand, made nine points in the third that saw the Tropang Giga take control of the contest and arrested the Bolts’ three-game winning streak.

Chris Newsome had 17 points but Meralco dropped in a three-way of fifth to seventh places with defending champion San Miguel Beer and Magnolia at 5-4.

The Bolts played the first of a back-to-back and are scheduled to play the Terrafirma Dyip at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
